Mango and Avocado Salad With Kale Chips

What you'll need:

2 bunches of kale, 2 ripe mangoes

1tsp hot chili, 2 ripe avocados

1 large tomato, minced onion (about 1/3 cup)

cilantro, lime juice, olive oil

cayenne pepper, 1 clove garlic

tahini sauce, black pepper, sea salt, dried parsley

Thoroughly wash kale and remove thick stems. Cut into large bite size pieces. Toss with 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 1/4 cup if tahini sauce, 2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast. Turn you oven on to 200. Place kale on a large baking sheet and dehydrate for 1 and half hours.

Meanwhile, mash the avocado into a medium sized bowl with a fork. Add 1 diced tomato, 2 tablespoons of minced onion, 1 clove of minced garlic, 1/4 cup of fresh cilantro, 1 tablespoon of dried parsley, 1 teaspoon of lime juice, 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Mix well. Add sea salt and black pepper to taste.

Dice the mangoes. In a separate medium sized bowl toss the mangoes, 1 teaspoon of the hot chili, 3 tablespoons of cilantro, 1 tablespoon of minced onion, and 1 teaspoon of lime juice.

Garnish with fresh cilantro or other fresh herbs.

I'm nearing the end of my fourth day on a raw foods fast. This interesting fusion of flavors was precisely what I need to motive myself to continue. It was simply delicious. Even after the fast is over I plan on using this recipe on a regular basis.

Isn't this ring wicked? I found this at an adorable boutique by the name of Hey Tiger! in Louisville, Kentucky. They offer quirky handmade, vintage and some new clothing and other goods like beauty products, accessories and decor. Louisville is truly one of my favorite places for vintage and thrifting. Unlike most cities, the prices are reasonable. You've got to appreciate being in the good ol' Midwest sometimes.

I can't believe it's already time to think about holiday shopping. I'm sticking to second hand and homemade gifts this year which means I need to kick it into gear and start frequenting the local thrift stores and crafting my gifts. I'd hate to spoil the surprise for my friends that read my blog but I will say I'm using dictionary pages, tea, shot glasses, lace and vintage images for some of the projects I'm working on.

Outside of the basics (shocks, tights, undies) I've decided to stop buying from fast-fashion corporations entirely and focus more on local boutiques and independent designers. This shouldn't be terribly difficult considering nearly every article of clothing I own is second hand anyway. As I sit here in my dress bought last year from H&M labeled "Made in China" I feel insanely guilty knowing that I am supporting everything I'm against. This being said, I need clean the dust off my sewing machine and prepare myself for long evenings doing alterations to thrifted, awkward fitting pieces.

Thanksgiving is tomorrow!! Evan and I are hosting Thanksgiving dinner at our house for the first time. I'm pretty excited but will have to wake up hella early tomorrow if I'm going to have everything ready on time. Yikes, so much to do! I hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday!!

I saw the Pixies play Doolittle last week at the beautiful Louisville Palace Theater. They also played a lot of b-sides and a couple of songs from Surfer Rosa and Come on Pilgrim. So, so good. Not only was their sound as solid as the album, they had amazing visuals and short films including Salvador Dalí's Un Chien Andalou. I also was privileged enough to see Jefferey Lewis the other night right here in my little town. It was one of the most intimate performances I've seen in a long time.

I've decided I need to focus more on refashioning what I already own and take a break from new clothing purchases. It isn't how much I spend on clothing causing problems, realistically 90% of what I own is second hand and costs next to nothing. The issue is the quantity. Organization is not my strong point and my collection of clothing and shoes is beginning to take over the house. That being said, I have set a seemingly impossibly goal: GET ORGANIZED! I feel like what I own is manageable as long as I can execute a well thought out storage plan.

I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful Autumn weather. I certainly am. 70 degrees, partly cloudy, golden hues.... yes, please!

In Between

Several years ago Evan, my friend Kinsey and I went on a road trip from Indiana to California. As much as I enjoyed the snowy mountains of Colorado, the empty deserts of Arizona and the dynamism of San Diego I cannot help but to value the Midwest. The rolling hills of southern Indiana, the beautiful colors of Autumn, the farmland tucked in between it all offer a sense of peace and nostalgia. I suppose that is why I'm still here. With the exception of the backwards people and the small minded drama of those people, I really love it here. Fortunately, in my little liberal college town, I don't have to deal with much of that and still am able to benefit from all of the beauty of the Midwest.

These photos were taken on a hike at a little Lake not but a mile or two from my house. Although not originally meant for a blog post, I haven't posted in sometime so decided I would use them anyway. This is me. No makeup, hair that has gone unwashed for days. All elements of this outfit have been thrifted- the flannel Evan's. Sometimes you just need a laid-back, low-key kind of day.

Vegetable Provençal

This Mediterranean dish offers strong aromas and a savory flavor. Serve it as a side or with pita as a main course.

Ingredients
1 onion, sliced                                                                           14-ounce can of diced tomatoes
2 leek, slices                                                                             1 and 1/2 cups chickpeas, cooked
2 garlic cloves, minced                                                               3 tablespoons of tomato paste
1 red bell pepper, seeded and sliced                                            1/4 cup ruby port wine
1 yellow bell pepper, seeded and sliced                                        olive oil
1 green bell pepper, seeded and sliced                                        3-4 tablespoons of chopped fresh
1 large zucchini, sliced                                                                                    mixed herbs
4 red potatoes, sliced and halved

Heat a couple tablespoons of olive oil in a large saucepan. Add potatoes and cook on medium low for 3-5 minutes. Add onion, leeks, garlic, peppers, and zucchini. Add tomatoes, port, tomato paste and mix well. Rinse, drain, and add chickpeas to the pan.

Bring to a boil, cover and simmer gently for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until veggies are tender but not overcooked. To thicken, remove the lid in the last 10 minutes of the cooking time and increase the heat.

Add fresh herbs and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately, garnished with chopped mixed herbs.

Yes, this purse exists. I didn't have Evan take a close up to show the detailing but it was obviously hand crafted by an old crazy cat lady. The cats are made up of tiny beads and felt with a vintage straw bag as the base. I can only hope that I make it to this level of awesomeness when I'm 70. This lovely coral vintage skirt is one of my favorite pieces- not because it's incredibly unique but on the contrary, I can wear it with anything. And the color, divine. My best friend got married yesterday! Evan had the pleasure of being her photographer so I'll wait until some of the photos are processed to share anymore about it. I will say that it was perfect.

A couple of weeks back Evan and I attended the Evening Roar at the Exotic Feline Rescue Center.

Having known about it for years, I was delighted to finally get the chance to check it out. I could not have been more pleased by my experience. With over 230 exotic cats (a large majority being tigers), the Exotic Feline Rescue Center provides permanent homes to neglected, abused, and abandoned cats. It was really interesting to see the big cats outside of a mid-day zoo setting. The cats seemed lively, content, and even affectionate toward the dedicated staff during our evening tour. In addition, the guides told the stories behind many of the cats. Some were truly heart breaking. Please take a second and check out this non-profit here.

Did you know that all white tigers are related? Because of years of inbreeding many are plagued with mental and physical complications.

As the days become shorter I come closer and closer to my winter hibernation. During these bitter Indiana months I find myself catching up on my favorite hobbies- cooking, reading, and crafting. One day, when I don't have a career, these activities will surely consume my time. Until then, they make perfect fall/winter after work endeavors.

On a recent trip to Urbana, Illinois for the Pygmalion Music Festival I stumbled upon Jane Addams Book Shop. This colossal book shop offers three stories of used books featuring every subject imaginable all neatly organized alphabetically and by category. Just when I began to feel overwhelmed by the selection, I came across a detailed map that made browsing the store a breeze. The atmosphere was quiet and calm with plenty of little nooks to relax in a rocking chair and read.

I was ecstatic to find a 1973 Max Ernst book featuring lesser known (to me at least) paintings, etchings, and sculptures. Among other treasures, I found a Talking Heads 1981 in depth biography/interview publication. My favorite artist and my favorite band. A success indeed.

Forest Fire

Hey, remember me? Having been consumed by work, I've been trying to balance things out by taking it easy and indulging in awesome adventures. Also, Evan recently came into hundreds of super Nintendo games so... we've been doing a lot of that.

Just this past weekend Ev and I hosted a wine and cheese party. There was a selection of about seven wines, six cheeses, bread, crackers, and fruit. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take a photo of the set up but now I regret not doing so. It was cute. Just under twenty of our closest friends attended, (most) dressed in their finest. The wine flowed.... and flowed. Oh, and I made Sangria. I found this recipe for Sangria and it turned out wonderfully! I followed the recipe exactly except added an extra shot or two of triple sec and used Cabernet Sauvignon as my base wine. It's perfect for any party, I highly recommend trying it!

Recycled Shelving

While cleaning out our garage, Ev and I came across these old dresser drawers. The broken dresser had long been discarded; however, we had kept the drawers to use as boxes when we moved into our house about a year and a half ago. Being the type of people that do not like to throw things out, we immediately decided to turn these guys into our new shelves (which I had been on Ev for a while to make). I cannot take credit for how these turned out, Ev cleaned, painted, and mounted these on the wall while I was at work a few weeks back. I was so pleased with the outcome and will be checking campus dumpsters for dresser drawers to hang in the office, bedroom, and hobby room. Just a quick, easy, cheap idea I thought was worth sharing!

supplies needed: old dresser drawers, paint, 3" nails
notes: don't forget to locate studs before nailing! Otherwise, your shelves may come crashing down!!

Simple Gourmet-Styled Pizzas

Sun-Dried Tomato, Veggie, and Goat Cheese

3/4 cup oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, drained, and thinly sliced
2 tablespoons oil from jar
6 large basil leaves, thinly sliced
4 oz goat cheese
pre-baked pizza crust
1 medium onion, diced
1/2 summer squash
freshly ground pepper to taste
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
3-4 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese (I used a vegan substitute)

Pre-head over to 400.

In a small bowl combine goat cheese, basil, oil, and tomatoes. Staying within one inch of the outside edge, spread the mix onto the pizza crust using the back of a spoon or other smooth, rounded surface. Top with onions and summer squash (you may also use peppers, mushrooms... whatever you fancy). Sprinkle with rosemary, pepper, and Parmesan cheese. Bake for 12 minutes.

Veggie Pesto

1 bunch of basil

2/3 cup olive oil

4-5 cloves garlic (based on size)

1/2 Parmesan cheese (I used a vegan substitute)

2 tablespoons butter (substitute), softened

Pre-baked pizza crust
Toppings (I used green pepper, onion, tomatoes, garlic)

1/2 teaspoon oregano

1/2 teaspoon dried red peppers

4-6 oz of mozzarella cheese

Wash basil very well to remove all of the dirt and pat dry. Discard stems. Place oil, basil, and garlic in a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. Transport to n a bowl and stir in cheese. Stir in softened butter. *Do not include these ingredients into the food processor; otherwise it will not turn out as smooth.

Spread the pesto staying within one inch of the end. Top it, bake it, eat it!

It's officially back to school shopping season and work has been busy. This is just the beginning. The next month and a half is going to be nonstop. For those of you who don't know, I manage a second hand store that buys and sells teen/young adult gently used, trendy clothing and accessories. I absolutely love my job; however, being the only store of its kind in town it gets insane around this time of the year. I'll do my best to keep things around here caught up but I may be late to respond to comments and emails.

It's finally raining tonight!! My flowers and vegetables can't sustain much more of this heat and lack of rain. Although still producing a lot of fruit, my zucchini almost met it's end these last couple of day. Luckily, everything else looks wonderful and is right on schedule! I never thought I would enjoy growing things as much as I do. I've learned so much this summer and can't wait to start over again next year.

Good Feeling (chicago pt2)

This marks my 100th post! Originally I had planned on doing something special for this post but time has not been on my side. Instead, here are the photos from day two in Chicago last weekend.

We spent the majority of the day exploring The Art Institute of Chicago. If you’ve never been there I highly recommend it next time you are visiting Chicago. Their selection of modern art, specifically surrealism, was quite impressive. I saw classic pieces from de Chirico, Miró, Man Ray, Dali, Duchamp, Magritte, Matisse, Kandinsky, O’Keeffe, Picasso, Seurat… the list goes on. The highlight of the museum was the massive collection of Max Ernst, my favorite artist. The only disappointment was that Evan and I were expecting to see Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography; however, it was not on display at the time.

The latter part of the day was spent hanging out at the beach, eating Indian food, and napping in a park. We were both exhausted from walking around all day and fell asleep under a tree in a secluded area of the park. When we awoke nearly two hours later there was a jazz festival going on around us and we were surrounded by people. It was a strange way to wake up.

The Softest Bullet Ever Shot

In just 10 days I will be in Chicago indulged in the magic of the Flaming Lips. This will be my fourth time having the privilege to see them live. Seeing the Flaming Lips live is more than a performance, it's an experience. This year they are playing the entire Soft Bulletin album along with a second set where they will be performing Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. For seven years the Flaming Lips have been one of my most beloved bands. Even in my teens when my life was consumed by punk rock, the Flaming Lips remained a favorite.

I've recently discovered a flea market just outside of my community that has so many joys and wonders. Evan and I visited this market on a whim on our way to the city. Unfortunately, we were on a time restriction and didn't get to explore as much as we would have liked to. I did, however, find this gorgeous western vintage bag along with several other treasures including a 1970's floral lamp and 1950's lace gloves. We took this little adventure to the city to celebrate our anniversary the best way we know how- vintage shopping, thrifting, and record stores. Our last stop of the day was this peace park to snap a few photos.

I wanted to thank everyone for the kind words regarding Evan's and my first wedding anniversary. I had to work the entire day and didn't image we would do anything too special considering we had gone out of town Friday. I was pleasantly surprised when I came home from work to a candle lit dinner consisting of coconut tofu and curried corn, a gorgeous bouquet of flowers, and a romantic letter placed inside of an otherwise empty scrapbook.

Black Bean and Cream Cheese Enchiladas

Drain the beans and place in medium sized sauce pan. Add all other filling ingredients. Simmer on low for about 10 minutes. Mash about one third of the bean against the side of the pot and stir to blend. Set aside to cool.

To make the sauce.... In a large skillet heat the olive oil. Add onions and garlic and cook over medium heat for about 10 minuted, or until tender and limp, stirring often. Add chopped tomato with all of its juice along with the chilies, water, tomato paste, and jalapeno pepper. Stir to blend. Cook for about 5 minutes or until sauce thickens.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spoon a little of the sauce on the bottom of a large backing dish. Using about 2 tablespoons of the bean mixture per tortilla, assemble the enchiladas and place them into the dish. Spread the remaining sauce over the enchiladas evenly. Top with grated cheese. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until hot and bubbly. Serve with sangria.

Although I typically avoid canned products, this recipe makes for a quick, simple any day meal. Despite my satisfaction with the flavor, I look forward to when my garden is producing tomatoes and hot peppers so I can improve this meal.

Wedding Anniversary

Today is Evan’s and my first wedding anniversary! So many wonderful things have happened throughout the first year of our journey through married life. I anxiously await what the years to come will bring.

When I first met Evan in 2006 I could have never imaged the impact he was going on have on my life. Honestly, I was a wreck. Together we got through the negative obstacles of broken youth and became responsible adults and homeowners. I could not ask for a stronger bond, a more perfect union. He is, after all, my muse.

Pictured above is Evan, myself, Kinsey, and Brandon (her fiance) during the wedding reception. Kinsey is not only my best friend but the most independent, strong woman I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Without having met her (also in 2006) I am unsure I would be the person I am today. She opened my mind and heart to another way of life. For that, I have only her to thank.

Keeping up with my blog has become an impossible task the last couple of weeks. Since my assistant moved on I've been working nearly 60 hours a week. Between interviews, setting up clearance, and doing a new floor set I haven't the time to think let alone do anything for myself. I don't want this to come off as though I'm complaining. I love my job and really enjoy the work. It's just a stressful time.

Some of you made note of my newest thigh piece in this post. Well, I had it finished Sunday. I never would have imaged a thigh tattoo would hurt as much as it did! Once it's all healed up I'll be sure to show it off properly.

What You'll Need:

1 lb fresh spinach                                                                       sauce:
2 large potatoes, boiled and mashed                                          1/4 cup butter or butter substitute
2 medium carrots, finely diced and cooked                                 1 medium onion, minced
1 tablespoon whole wheat flour                                                  1 bay leaf
1 tablespoon ground coriander                                                   1/2 tsp ground cardamom
1/2 tsp turmeric                                                                       1/2 tsp turmeric
1/4 tsp ground cumin                                                                1 1/2 tsp ground coriander
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper                                                             1 1/2 tsp ground cumin
2 tsp raw sugar                                                                         1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
3/4 tsp salt                                                                              1 large tomato, chopped

2 eggs, lightly beaten 2 1/2 cups coconut milk

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Wash the fresh spinach thoroughly. Remove stems and discard. Place the spinach in a large pot with just the water that clings to it. Cook until just wilted. When cool, squeeze out all of the moisture. Mince.

Koftas: Combine spinach, mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, flour, and the seasonings in a large bowl and mix well.

Place the beaten eggs and bread crumbs in separate bowls and keep them in front of you. One at a time, form the potatoes mixture into 1 1/2 inch balls, roll them in the egg, then in the bread crumbs.

Use a deep fryer until golden brown and crispy. If you do not have a deep fryer, pour enough oil into a large skillet to reach 1/2 inch up the sides of the pan. Heat oil over medium heat (do not let the oil get so hot that it is smoking). Fry the balls, turning often. Drain on (paper) towels and set aside.

Sauce: Heat the butter in a large skillet. When hot, add minced onion and all of the spices, saute for 2 minutes. Add tomato and stir to blend. Add the coconut milk and salt, stir, and boil the mixture for 3 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place the koftas in a shallow baking dish and pour the sauce over them. Cover and bake for 20 minutes or until sauce has thickened. Serve with red lentil dal and naan.

*About the recipe: I only used 2 cups of coconut milk and wished I had a little extra sauce for naan. Using 2 1/2 or maybe even 3 cups is a much better idea. If you choose to do this, you may want to add an extra pinch of the spices used in the sauce. Regardless, the meal turned out flavorful filling the house with the aroma of Indian spices. This is definitely a recipe I will make again and again.

The American Apparel blouse put me out $30; however, I have such a hard time thrifting somewhat fitted layering tops that it was well worth it. I realize that $30 isn't a lot to spend on a blouse but when you buy 98% of your clothing used, it feels like an irrational expense.

I had sort of forgotten about this unofficial music video released last February for LCD Soundsytem's Dance Yourself Clean. Everytime I see it I'm left feeling uplifted and nostalgic.

It's been nearly two weeks since my last proper post. Since getting back from Las Vegas work has been very demanding. Sadly, after three years, my current assistant manager is leaving the state to pursue a visual merchandising career with Forever 21. Over the years she has become a dear friend and as happy as I am to see her move on to bigger things, I’ll miss her.

Otherwise, things are good! My garden is coming along better than I had imaged. My housemate moved out and Evan and I are setting up an office and home studio for his photography. The storms in Indiana have been relentless but I'm hoping for a few sunny days to work in the garden and maybe even do a little canoeing.

Heeelllooo from Las Vegas! I'd be lying if I were to say that I am impressed with Sin City. Although flying over the mountains and desert was a dream, I'm staying in the heart of downtown and was immediately turned off by the loud pop music and crowded walk ways. On the plus side, I'm only three miles away from the art district and I will be meeting a photographer friend while I'm in the city.

Several months ago Evan and I watched the the Japanese film Battle Royale, based on a novel by Koushun Takami. Under totalitarian rule, Japan holds a lottery in which a class of ninth graders will be sent to a deserted island where they must kill each other off until there is one survivor. Each student is given one weapon ranging from a trash lid to machine guns. Kill or be killed. The sole survivor leaves the island alive. It was violent, full of dark humor, and emotionally disturbing. We loved it. This being said, when Evan and I came across the first edition manga we bought it without hesitation. I read the entire manga from SLC to Las Vegas and cannot wait to get the rest of the series. It was absolutely fantastic!!

Rolled Lasagna with Kale and Spinach in a Tomato Cream Sauce

What You'll Need:

Pasta/Filling
1/2 lb kale (weighed with stems)
1/2 lb spinach
1 tbsp olive oil
8-10 lasagna noodles (based on length)
2 tbsp butter/butter substitute
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 medium onion
8 oz feta cheese- crumbled
4 oz (about 1 cup) finely diced mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese (I used vegan Parmesan in order to avoid the animal based rennet)
Salt and Freshly Ground Pepper To Taste

Sauce:
4 tbsp butter/butter substitute
4 tbsp whole wheat flour
3 cups milk (I used unsweetened Almond milk- personal preference)
2/3 cup tomato puree
*To save money, I used 4 oz of tomato paste with 1 cup of water and mixed well. It's all the same.
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp oregano
Salt and Freshly Ground Pepper to Taste
*I avoid salt whenever possible and instead I used a salt-free all season instead

Rinse kale and spinach well by dunking it in a large bowl of cold water. Cut off stems and any thick leaf ribs and compost/discard. Roughly chop the greens and place in a large (6+ quart) pot with a few tablespoons of water. Cover the pot and steam under bright green and tender (about 5 minutes). DO NOT overcook or the greens will turn an olive brown and have an over powering flavor. Drain in a colander, set aside, and let cool.

Meanwhile, using the same large pot, boil the lasagna noodles under tender but not mushy. Drain, run cool water over, and toss with olive oil to prevent sticking. Set aside.

Once the greens are cool enough to handle, squeeze out remaining moisture with your hands. Chop the greens to a fine texture (not so much that it is minced). In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add garlic and onion and saute for 5 minutes. Add greens and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Place the greens mixture in a large bowl and add in cheese, salt, and pepper. Set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

The sauce: In a medium saucepan melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk until blended. Cook this roux for about 2 minutes whisking frequently. Add the milk, tomato product, nutmeg, remaining seasonings and whisk to blend. Cook for 7 minutes, or until the sauce come to a boil whisking often. Remove from heat.

*if your sauce isn't thick enough, add 1/4 tablespoon of flour and whisk until well blended. You may have to do this twice.

To assemble the lasagna: Pour a little of the sauce in a large baking dish to coat the bottom. Lay your lasagna on your work surface and spread about 1/8 (or 1/10 for smaller noodles) of the greens mixture evenly over it. It doesn't make to be perfect, the mixture will spread when it bakes. Roll the lasagna loosely. Repeat this with rest of the noodles. Pour the remaining sauce over top of the rolled noodles. At this point feel free to add more Parmesan cheese or spices to the top for aesthetics.

Bake uncovered for 30 minutes or until bubbly.

About the meal: This is easily the best Italian dish I have ever made. I recommend serving it with fresh farm bread, a vegetable heavy salad, and red wine.

This is the first half of a series I did with Heather back in mid March. I took full advantage of my clothing addiction and pieced together eight different looks for Nikki and I. Apart from the frigid winds, it was a rather enjoyable experience. The rest of the set is in post production and should be ready before long.

May is turning out to be hectic. This is a very busy time at work, requiring long hours to stay caught up. As soon as it starts to slow back down I'm leaving for Las Vegas for a work conference. My personal life is just as exhausting with four photo shoots between now and the end of the month and a garden that must be planted soon. Hopefully I will still have time to blog somewhat regularly.

It has been raining nonstop in Indiana so please excuse the wet hair. Evan and I ran outside to shoot between flooding waters. We are supposed to see two days of sun before the rain picks up again. Oh, I'll be so glad when this wet April is over and Spring can really begin. My indoor plants can't handle much more of this lack of sunshine!

Redesigning my blog isn't going as well as planned. I don't know what to do with my header! I'm considering just leaving it alone and focus more time on uploading crafts and recipes. I suppose I should care less about the aesthetics and more on content. Does anyone have a good resource for high resolution images for either cheap or free? Not only am I looking for inspiration for a new header, I need images for over-sized printing to use in crafting.

Vegan Curry Potatoes

Preparation: Approximately 1 hour

What You'll Need:

8 red potatoes
1 yellow onion
2 tomatoes (diced)
16 oz frozen peas
14 oz coconut milk
15 oz garbanzo beans (chick peas)
3 cloves garlic
Olive Oil

2 tsp cumin

1" piece of fresh ginger minced (or 1/2 tsp ground ginger)

4 tsp garam masala

4 tsp curry powder

1 tsp sea salt

**This recipe is spicy! For a more mild flavor use 2 tsp curry powder instead.

Cut potatoes (leave the skin on) into 1 inch cubes and boil in water until medium tender (approximately 12-15 minutes). While that is cooking....

Mix spices in a cup and set aside.

In a large skillet heat about 2 tbsp of olive oil over medium heat. Saute onions and garlic until onions appear translucent (approximately 2-3 minutes) stirring frequently. Add spices and cook for another two minutes stirring often. (Do not be afraid of the spices burning. That is precisely what makes the dish so flavorful). Drain and add potatoes, peas, garbanzo beans, and tomatoes. Stir. Add coconut milk and simmer for 15 minutes.

This is easily one of my favorite dishes to make and is habitually my choice to bring along to dinner parties, family functions, or any other reason to prepare food for a lot of people. This dietary restricted friendly meal is sure to be a crowd pleaser with it's aromatic flavors and colorful appearance.

Today marked day one of my escape from all responsibilities. With seven days to go, I look forward to what the next week will bring. Having been such an inconsistent blogger as of late, I plan on doing some major catching up and optimistically preparing back up tutorials and recipes.

Since then, I was able to catch part of the album streaming on NPR. She has really developed her sound in this album. It’s one of the most exciting things I’ve heard all year.

Boy, what a week it has been! As intense as my work life can be, I love the diversity of the job. As some of you may know, I manage a young adult clothing store that buys and sells gently used, trendy and vintage clothing. This week my time was spent planning inventory needs for the next 6 months, marketing, fashion collages, creating a "Boutique Bargains" section, and hosting a group interview. As lame as it sounds.... my job makes me super happy. The staff is incredible, the clothing is amazing, and creativity is always encouraged.

In other news.... my stay-cation starts next week!! Having just bought a home last summer, it was unrealistic of my husband and I to think we could go overseas this Spring. Plus, we have been planning on taking a trip to Japan for a few years and this is definetly not the best time to go. I'm perfectly content relaxing at home, working in the garden, and having time for art.

Although a bit basic for a blog post, this is what I was wearing last week when Evan and I spent the late afternoon at a local park. The weather peaked into the 80s just to snow again this past weekend. Indiana's weather is obnoxiously unpredictable. Regardless, those warm days were exceedingly enjoyable.

A secluded place at the park, a bottle of sweet wine, hummus, flat bread and fresh fruit have become key elements in creating the most desirable conclusion of a busy day. There is nothing better than having a romantic picnic with my husband on a warm day.

I hope everyone is having a great week! I have been super busy working on some projects. Hopefully I will have a new craft tutorial in the next week or so. I've been experimenting with different techniques involving spray paint and water and have been seeing some really interesting results. I am looking forward to sharing my newest creations with all of you!!

I cannot believe that March is nearly over. The older and busier I become, the more rapidly time moves. As a child, I remember endless seasons; summers felt like years. Music: Defiance, Ohio

Evan and I ate at The Owlery, a new vegetarian and vegan restaurant in Bloomington, Indiana tonight. The restaurant opened about a week ago and we had been looking forward to trying it out. All in all we had a great experience; the food was delicious, the staff was super friendly; and it was relatively cheap. If you're ever in Bloomington, even if your not a vegetarian, I highly recommend you check this place out. I see this becoming an easy favorite in town. As an added bonus, the co-owner Ryan is the bassist/vocalist for one of my personal favorite bands, Defiance,Ohio.

Music: the Dismemberment Plan

Pitchfork Music Festival revealed the first group of bands that will be performing this summer.

After being dissatisfied with other festival lineups this summer, I was relieved to see a few

strong acts such as Animal Collective, the Dismemberment Plan and Deerhunter announced.

I anxiously await the rest of the lineup. Considering how great the last few years have been, I

cannot image Pitchfork will be a disappointment.

I'd like to thank Shoe from Soapsuds and Doodles for bestowing upon me the versatile blogger award!!

I just adore Shoe's blog. Her style is so colorful and unique. It's an honor to be noticed by her!! So, now 7 interesting things about me....

1. My house is a petting zoo. Evan and I own three cats (Colors, Stoner, Walt), one dog (Avon Barksdale), one hedgehog (Penelope), and my house mate has two cats (Peach, Belle). I grew up in the country with cats, dogs, and pet rats. My passion for animals hasn't changed much.

2. I am terrified of birds. Ever since I was little I have had several traumatic experiences with birds. The worst being when I was 18 on my way to a cabin for the weekend with a group of friends. We were driving down the highway at about 55 mph. Suddenly, a bird hits the driver's side window edge, darted across to the passengers seat and exploded onto my bare thigh. There was blood all over my skin. Luckily, the driver in the car we were following had baby wipes and helped clean all of the blood off of me while I was in a state of shock.

3. Since I can remember, horror and Disney films have been my absolute favorite types of films. My first memory in the theater was an anniversary release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I remember watching horror flicks like the Exorcist, Candyman, IT and Halloween when I was just three and four.

4. In our nearly five years together, Evan and I have spent less than two weeks apart. I think we like each other.

5. I'm a college drop-out. Twice, actually. Each time was necessary for different reasons. The second time was easily one of the best decisions I have ever made. I didn't see the point to pay so much for a half ass education from a community college just to get a piece of paper telling me that I was a graduate. I am perfectly capable of educating myself. Plus, I didn't have the debt and was able to purchase a home.

6. My goal in life is to buy 20+ acres with an old home in the middle of nowhere, fix it up, and farm the land. Basically, I was to practice sustainable living. For income, I plan on opening an online vintage store and work with Evan on a photography career.

7. I cannot stand for my knees to be touched. It makes me nauseous just thinking about it. I'm not exactly sure why but I have felt this way since I was a kid.

original tags still attached! This piece is surely going to be a staple item for spring.
The only downside- silk wrinkles so easily!

Thank you to everyone for wishing Evan a happy birthday! Unfortunately, we decided against going to Louisville. With it being so close to my friend's due date we didn't want to risk being out of town. Instead, three of Evan's best friends came to stay with us. The weather was lovely- just warm enough to pull out the croquet set!

I've had just about all I can take of this freezing weather. The first half of winter I was so productive. I read a few books, worked on some backed up sewing, and did several arts and crafts. The season has finally gotten the best of me and my creativity has been put on a hold. These days the only thing I want to do is eat and lie around watching the X-Files. For any nerds out there, if you haven't given X-Files a chance since you were a kid, I highly recommend it.

I have really exciting news.... Evan and I have been hired to photograph our very first wedding!! It's not the direction Evan wants to take with photography but it's a job and it will be a fantastic learning experience. Everyone has to start somewhere. Our next goal is to build a home studio. Hopefully we will have that fully functioning by the end of spring.

Joan Miró

April 20, 1893 – December 25, 1983

André Breton (poet, founder of the Surrealist movement) described Joan Miró as “the most Surrealist of us all.” And although Joan Miró refused to be categorized into any artistic movement, the free, almost moving forms and child-like wonderment in his work have been interpreted as falling into both the Surrealism and Dada movements. Like many artists and poets of the time Miró, originally from Barcelona, left Spain in 1920 to escape Franco’s fascist reign. While living in Paris, Miró was among the first artists to develop automatism (automatic or free form drawing).

Another technique used by Miró to create the strange images in his paintings was starvation. He would lay in bed having eaten nothing all day and draw the shapes he saw forming on his ceiling.

His style is extremely whimsical, made unique through the use of biomorphism/organic forms, sharp lines, vivid use of color and sexual symbols. Miró’s independent attitude towards the art community allowed for freedom of expression without the confinements of a genre. I first became interested in Miró's work in 2007 and was immediately infatuated with his style. Soon after, Evan and I ordered an over sized print of Blue II (pictured below). This simple painting arouses complex emotions and offers a calming sense. I thought it to be a perfect piece for our living space.

One of the biggest highlights of 2010 was visiting the Museum of Modern Art and having the privilege to view close to fifty of Miró's original pieces. Although much of his work involves a copious amount of subjects to interpret, I believe Miró's strong point lies in his ability to convey a strong message through simplicity.

I'm not going to tell you how to interpret these pieces. Art, especially that which is closely related to Dada, rejects the traditional idea of art and can only be construed by the individual. Personally, I don't view Miró's work and try to figure out the meaning; I focus on how it makes me feel.

Vintage Inspired Mirror Tutorial

This vintage inspired mirror is fantastically easy to make and uses few materials.

What you will need: An old mirror that needs reworking (a photo frame would work beautifully as well) with a border or at least three inches, lace, metallic gold spray paint, painters tape, newspaper, and coarse sandpaper (I used 60 grit).

**Note: my mirror had a blue frame to begin with. If you want a colored base be sure to paint the border the previous day.

Step One: Use the sandpaper to create texture. Be sure to sand in all different directions to attain a worn out look. Press hard and don't be afraid to remove any existing paint.

Step Two: Cover the mirror (or glass if you're working with a frame) with newspaper completely and hold into place with painters tape.

Step Three: Place the lace over top of the mirror. Be sure your pattern is straight. Loosely tuck the excess lace under the mirror.

Step Four: Spray paint the border gold. Be sure to get the edges and corners. To achieve an imperfect look, focus on a few areas and apply extra spray paint from all angles.

Step Five: Let set for about twenties minutes and then remove the lace. Be very careful- the paint will still be wet.

Step Six: Let your project dry for a couple of hours then remove the tape and newspaper. Hang up your hand made craft and enjoy.

The days are getting longer and the weather a bit warmer. Although it won't be long before the next snow fall, I dream of spring and all of its beauty and new beginnings. I anxiously await blossoming flowers and starting my very first vegetable garden.

Last night Evan and I watched The Adventures of Prince Achmed- the oldest surviving animated film. German animator Lotte Reiniger created the film in 1926 from cardboard and lead silhouette cut outs. This silent film beautifully tells an enchanted story of Arabian nights. The intricate designs made from such simple materials make for a fascinating work of art. If you have a Netflix account, the film is currently on the "Watch Instantly" list.
